There are six known super-heroes in the world, and Phoenix, Arizona is proud to call the young Windjammer their own. Windjammer is actually Shane Doleman, a twenty-year old college student whose powers just started showing up as he grew from childhood. He and his mother kept this great secret until he was a teenager, when Shane started hearing about the local urban legend called Anthem, a mystery man with super-powers who fought crime in the late-night downtown streets. Where most in the city scoffed at the story, Shane yearned to find the man, and after much searching, finally did one night. This man’s real name was Porter Scott, and Shane found in him a kindred spirit, a tutor, and a father-figure to replace the actual father that had died just before Shane’s birth. Porter trained him in the use of his powers, planning for a day far down the road when the boy would become a hero himself. But when Porter stumbled across a deadly plot within the company he worked for, he was discovered and taken hostage by the terrorist that had plans for statewide nuclear annihilation. That's when Shane became Windjammer, to rescue his mentor and save his home state.

Since this first public appearance (not long ago), Windjammer has been seen sparsely and in times of need, and always makes big news. He has control over the winds, and rides them on a special board designed for him by Porter's co-workers at Rising Technologies, a trio of tech men who are among the very few who know who Windjammer really is. He can fly and cast blasts of wind at his foes, and as he grows older, his control over the winds is increasing. He wears a costume with built-in body armor (another gift from Rising) that can stop a bullet (and has had to on several occasions). He's adored by the public, and most especially by female fans. Where for a while his fame was mostly citywide, a global fascination with him has started and grows stronger each day. Being naturally humble (and a bit clueless), Windjammer isn't quite sure what to make of it all yet.

When not being a super-hero, Shane Doleman is a college student, a theater arts major. He caught his mother's acting bug (much as she tried to dissuade him, as her experiences as a former soap opera star in the 1970s did much to scar her impressions of the business), and is quite accomplished at the craft. He lives in a near-campus apartment with his childhood friend, Jerry—who's an aspiring playwright—and works at a local Scottsdale resort waiting tables to make extra money. He spends much of his spare time out on the town clubbing (on the famous Mill Avenue strip next to ASU) or catching movies with Jerry, his fellow film fanatic.

Shane is a well-meaning, caring, genuinely good person. He uses his powers the way he does because it's the right thing to do. He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer necessarily, and is cursed with a seeming inability to make any kind of decision, but his totally inadvertent charm and genuineness draw people to him. He does worry a great deal about where his life as Windjammer is leading, and whether he'll have to forfeit the old life of Shane Doleman along the way. But his sense of responsibility keeps him going as he waits to see where it will all take him.
